A remarkable, but very humble 96-year-old, Luella Dreyer, was the January recipient of the Millville Chamber of Commerce’s Outstanding Citizen award.

The Rev. Gerritt Kenyon, retired long-time pastor of First Assembly of God Church, said: “Over the years, this sharp, now retired math teacher from northern New York State, is known for her diligent and caring kindness.  She has left a mark in the community with her tutoring, helping friends, especially in times of illness, volunteering in the church office, including bookkeeping,  vacation bible school, and various service groups.’’

Kenyon pointed out that she uses her teaching skills in the twice-monthly meetings of the “Seniors for Life” bible study group and does a superb  job.

A graduate of New York State College for teachers (now known as SUNY), Dreyer has taken graduate courses at the University of Wisconsin and Rowan University.

A native of Lowville, NY, Dreyer taught for five years in New York State before her family moved to Millville in 1950. She taught math at Millville Memorial High School from 1965 to 1985 and still does some tutoring at home.

“I’m very proud of the successful careers that many of my former students have,” Dreyer said. Her three sons---Don, Ron and Tom-- have achieved successful careers as well. Proud of Millville students, Dreyer attended every graduation ceremony until a couple of years ago. “I would tell my students,” you’re going to go far beyond what I accomplished.”

Before joining and becoming active in First Assembly of God in the late 70’s, the Dreyer family attended First United Methodist Church, where Luella was active in various groups. She was a Cub Scout den mother.  Dreyer said that she feels the church youth groups do many positive things in the community.

A woman who never stopped her love of learning and traveling, Dreyer recently went to Alaska with one of her grandchildren, a trip that was the highlight of the year.

In addition to three sons, Dreyer has six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Words of praise for a special woman:

“Luella has left a mark in the community with her tutoring, helping friends, especially in times of illness, volunteering in the church office, including bookkeeping, vacation bible school, and various service groups.’’
